Original Sketch Matrix – 20 Objects

This is the ‘master’ of crude line drawings of 20 objects which I have sketched from memory and which I intend should be recognizable as a particular object-type by any viewer with natural human visual recognition abilities. (Yeah! I know they’re rotten drawings!)

Here is a matrix of colour photos of these object-types (many of these are from the website of Kindersay and are used to teach children the names of objects).

Here are the photos rendered as line-drawings.

Here are the line drawings with ‘recognition triggers’ removed.

I will create a series of matrices of the same object-types featuring different representation techniques (e.g. photograph, full colour drawing).

I will then systematically to strip the pictures to their minimum significant lines and tones consonant with continued recognition.

In the unlikely event that object-types have particular visual recognition triggers this technique should enable me to corner them and create minimal trigger pictures.

I will also test Tanaka’s idea of abstracting and distorting the objects in line with the theory that the inferotemporal cortex has a filtering system which enables fine differentiation between shapes.

Here is the “outro” sequence from Thunderbirds.

Can you identify the vehicle from the opening detail shot?

Recognition

Degrading Objects

I will choose a fixed set of objects (e.g. chair, key, cat, person, Volkswagen) and look at what their recognition trigger features are.

I will use a number of pictures from classic recognition tests and test-sets.

Here is one of the stimulus sets from the classic 1962 study:

Pictorial Recognition as an Unlearned Ability: A Study of One Child’s Performance Author(s): Julian Hochberg and Virginia Brooks
